Miriam Gennari, a public figure and civic leader who’s produced and hosted The SustainableScoop on Arlington Independent Media for 13 years as part the nation’s longest running weekly news show understands the “way” things get done. While covering topics and themes that include community advocacy, innovative entrepreneurship, and “net zero” lifestyles, her unique and enlightening segments help to change policy, raise funds and support civic engagement. The SustainableScoop is known to be a tenable place for all citizens to share efforts to support sustainability on everything from tree canopy to clean water. It is the power of the press in the hands of the people. On many occasions, students were invited to be guests on the program to share their passion and projects pertaining to sustainability. Some examples include:
1) a science fair project that ended up on the desk of oil spill experts at the EPA.
In March 2019, Sweden’s Greta Thunberg called on her fellow students to walk out of their classrooms and protest in the street. When the world’s children went on strike to show their commitment to defending the future of our planet, Miriam had an idea, create a news crew made up of the teens who have been waiting on the sidelines for their turn to speak. “Enough of my voice,” the kids deserve a safe space to raise their bright hopeful and frustrated voices. That was the impetus for what is now Sustainability4Youth Lessons and Projects. With so many platforms and programs targeting the Gen Z government leaders and big corporations want their online attention, but repeatedly fail to listen to them. But their peers are listening and know with Covid 19, wild fires, and growing pollution their passions have turned to outrage. They are justified. Across America and around the world, minors, those yet unable to vote, are doing more than playing games on their phones; they are making films, organizing, and sharing research and addressing some of the planet’s most complex issues.
Today, SustainableScoop, is led by Alistair Watson a vibrant young man decicated to our mission. He and other environmentalists and business professionals are working to obtain non-profit status as a media and education platform. They are currently seeking content creators with the proper training to provide verified Scoops, that engage and motivate action among youth.
The courses provided at Sustaianbility4Youth are administered by well-vetted and connected civic leaders. Students will learn to develop real world journalistic and research capabilities that interlock the content developed they have developed. The courses are in great need during this time of Covid-19. when so many minors are finding themselves isolated from all opportunities to personally engage. Schools have been slow to adapt, and organizations are finding it hard to reach the demographic they need to tap the “energy of the young.” By developing the networking and public speaking experience gained through Minor Missions, Interview for Impact and Youth Mobilization events, they gain the opportunities to stay engaged.
The bottom line is it is all about access. The secret to the SustainableScoop and content educators like Sustainability4Youth is public access.
